Telefono Azzurro Launches 2023 Annual Report

On July 17th 2024, Telefono Azzurro hosted an event to present its 2023 Annual Report. The report sets out what the hotline has achieved during the past year and emphasises the critical need for effective support for children suffering from mental health conditions.

The 2023 Annual Report provides a comprehensive overview of Telefono Azzurro’s objectives, activities, and projects. It covers a range of topics including the protection of children and adolescents in the digital world, tackling grooming, sexual abuse, child sexual abuse material (CSAM), and cyberbullying. In particular, this year’s report focuses on children’s mental health and highlights that mental health conditions constitute a major burden for children and adolescents globally.

According to statistics from Telefono Azzurro’s 19696 helpline, mental health problems among children and adolescents are increasing dramatically. The report reveals that there has been a significant rise in requests for help related to mental health, largely linked to the increasingly pervasive use of digital technologies. Notably, there is an exponential increase in instances of suicidal ideation, self-harm and depression. Telefono Azzurro reaffirmed its commitment to providing vital support to children in need, ensuring they are never alone with their vulnerabilities. It provides a safe and dedicated listening space where children can seek help and discuss their difficulties.

This year’s 2023 Annual Report calls for strengthened action to safeguard children's rights online, emphasising the need to intensify efforts to equip children with adequate skills to fully benefit from the digital transformation.
