About

Artificial intelligence (AI) has opened doors for both opportunities and challenges in the online child protection landscape. It can offer many advantages in aiding hotlines in the identification and removal of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) online. However, it has also introduced a new online threat - AI-generated CSAM, an emerging form of abuse material that can be generated at the push of a button.

Presented by a specialised analyst of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) who will be referred to as “Alex”, this webinar delves into the realm of AI-generated CSAM and its profound implications for online child protection. The webinar provides an in-depth overview of the latest insights following the IWF’s report on AI abuse.

Through case studies, Alex illustrates the alarming extent to which AI is abused to generate CSAM, as well as sheds light on analytical findings drawn from discussions between AI CSAM perpetrators on the dark web. Lastly, challenges faced by hotline analysts in detecting and combating this rapidly evolving threat will be examined.

We recommend this webinar to hotline and content analysts, industry professionals, academics, law enforcement, and policymakers.

Speaker Biography

Alex is a specialised analyst of the IWF and has been working with the hotline for three years – first as a dedicated image assessor, then as an analyst. In 2023, after the first reports of AI-generated CSAM began to trickle into the hotline, Alex began to collect evidence of underground criminal misuse of AI systems. Alex has written reports setting out the problem – including one released by IWF in October 2023 – meanwhile, engaging and collaborating with industry, law enforcement and government to begin to develop solutions.

About the IWF

The IWF is the largest hotline in Europe dedicated to finding and removing child sexual abuse material from the internet. They’re a not-for-profit organisation and are supported by the global internet industry. Their analysts are often the first to see abuses of new and emerging technology for the creation and distribution of online child sexual abuse.
