Record high reports of illegal content in 2021 for Stopline

The willingness of internet users to report has increased significantly in the last year, as the current Stopline annual report shows. In 2021 a total of 43,496 reports of sexual abuse depictions of minors and Nazi activities on the internet were received by the reporting office, from which the Stopline employees classified 20% (8,156) as illegal. What is striking is that the sensitivity of internet users to depictions of sexual abuse by minors remains high. As in previous years, reports in this category account for 99.7% of content classified as illegal.

To ensure that illegal content can no longer be found on the internet, rapid action by all those involved is required. In Austria, the shared responsibility between the reporting office, providers and authorities in the fight against illegal content on the internet has proven itself. In 2021, one reported case of sexual abuse portraying minors was hosted in Austria.

On 5 May 2022, Stopline held its traditional press conference in cooperation with the Austrian ISP Association ISPA to present the statistics for 2021. The media coverage after the press conference was very positive and helps to increase the awareness amongst internet users regarding hotline work even further.
