INHOPE & Patreon prioritise user protection

We are thrilled to announce that Patreon is joining INHOPE’s annual funding partnerships program to be ahead of the curve and ensure that it’s users and the communities they nurture can exist within a safe environment.

Creating an online community is all about connections and that is what Patreon provides to its users, by linking fans to over 200,000+ creators. However, building communities comes with its challenges, one of which is the potential for harm and misuse by individuals looking to exploit the platform and its users. A way to avoid this is to prevent it!

By anticipating these potential risks Patreon has been able to proactively implement safeguards. The approach of Safety by Design is one that INHOPE strongly supports as it puts user safety and rights at the centre of the design and development of products and services. When an online platform scales up so do the demands on Trust and Safety. How robust a Trust and Safety program and team is determines the platforms’ ability to withstand these pressures which can turn minor issues into major user safety risks. In addition, early engagement with key stakeholders can promote and establish strong relationships.

“As Patreon continues to invest heavily in safety on the platform, partners like INHOPE are crucial to our continued efforts to upscale our knowledge and capabilities to combat abuse. We look forward to working closely with INHOPE to tackle the difficult challenges we both face.” – Laurent Crenshaw, Director of Policy at Patreon

“The rapid removal of CSAM from the digital environment is key to preventing the repeated abuse of victims aka re-victimsation. Patreon in coordination with INHOPE has created a trusted flagger program whereby any reports by INHOPE Hotlines on any potential incidences of CSAM on the Patreon platform will be automatically escalated to their trust & safety team for immediate action. By having a trusted flagger program in place with Patreon means INHOPE Hotline Analysts will be able to get any potential content rapidly reviewed and removed from the platform, protecting users and making the digital world safer.” – Denton Howard, Executive Director INHOPE

About Patreon
Patreon powers membership businesses for creators by giving them the tools they need to acquire, manage, and energize their paying patrons. With a subscription-style payment model, fans pay their favorite creators a monthly amount of their choice in exchange for exclusive access, extra content, or a closer look into their creative journey.
This model is a win-win; creators retain creative freedom while getting the salary they deserve, and fans get to rest easy knowing that their money goes directly towards creating more of what they love.

About INHOPE
INHOPE is the global network combatting online Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The Network consists of 50 hotlines in 46 countries that provide the public with a way to anonymously report illegal content online with a focus on CSAM. INHOPE is based in the Netherlands and our member Hotlines operate in all EU member states, Russia, South Africa, North & South America, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. In a borderless digital world, CSAM has global consequences. As CSAM increases, so do our efforts and those of our partners to combat it, aided by funding from the European Commission under the Better Internet for Kids Programme.
