The INHOPE Digital Literacy Guide

We are excited to announce the launch of the INHOPE Digital Literacy Guide. Developed with support from the European Commission, this new how-to guide offers young people clear, practical tips on how to stay safe online.

What is the INHOPE Digital Literacy Guide?

As the online world grows increasingly complex it's essential to stay up-to-date on how to ensure the internet remains a positive experience. Whether you spend most of your time on social media, in online forums or gaming lobbies - this guide will help you feel prepared to handle any situation that might arise.

What can I find in the Guide?

The guide is made up of three sections helping you navigate the entirety of a safe and positive online experience - from setting up your phone to knowing how and where to seek support if things go wrong.

1. Know your device
Your phone is smarter than you might think! It stores all your personal information, including your address and payment details, so it’s vital to keep it secure. This section helps you set up your devices safely, with tips on creating strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and keeping your software updated to guard against potential vulnerabilities.

2. Interacting Online
Safely interacting online isn’t just about noticing when others are out of line — it’s also about being mindful of how your own actions impact others. By leading with kindness and respect, you help create a positive online environment and become better at spotting suspicious behavior. To make sure you have all the tools you need, our guide also provides advice on recognising red flags, avoiding risky situations, and identifying people with harmful intentions. Plus, you’ll find tips on how to spot if friends are caught up in something harmful and how to offer them support.

3. Seeking Help
Sometimes, support from friends isn’t enough. When bigger problems arise, it’s important to know when to involve a trusted adult or seek help from support services. This section explains how to report harmful content and where to find emotional support and advice for online safety issues.

Who is the INHOPE Digital Literacy Guide for?

The guide is primarily intended for young people but is also a valuable resource for parents, teachers, safer internet centres, and hotlines who work to promote online safety. It is designed to be distributed widely by stakeholders, as part of our efforts to build a safer digital environment for all.
