Telefono Azzurro Advocates for Children's Rights Prior to European Elections

The first World Children's Day initiated by Pope Francis was held in Rome on May 25th and 26th. This event brought together thousands of children from 101 nations, and Telefono Azzurro played a pivotal role by deploying its volunteers to provide support and listening services.

On May 29th 2024, Telefono Azzurro continued its advocacy efforts by presenting the Manifesto for Childhood and Adolescence in Rome, promoted by the #VoteforChildren, a coalition composed of 23 child rights organisations aiming at putting children and their rights at the forefront of the EU Elections 2024. The event saw the participation of several candidates in the European elections, who signed the Manifesto. Telefono Azzurro called on on them to commit to putting children’s rights at the heart of their mandate, ensuring that no child is left behind and that EU policies and their implementation do not harm children.

The Manifesto aimed to present 10 concrete proposals to be shared with institutions, both in the short and long-term, to promote and protect children’s rights offline and online. In adherence to its Manifesto, Telefono Azzurro demands candidates invest time and resources to facilitate meaningful, inclusive, and safe participation of children in all EU legislative processes and debate, recognising child participation as a fundamental right. It also emphasises combating child and family poverty which should remain a political priority for the European Parliament. Overall, this event served not only as a platform for discussion but also as a call to action to ensure the rights of every child are fully recognised and respected.
