Stopline: Reports of illegal content remain high in 2022

In 2022, Stopline received 33,257 reports of child sexual abuse material and Nationalist activities on the internet. Although this represents a decrease compared to 2021, the average number of incoming reports remains notably high. The willingness of internet users to report has obviously increased significantly over the last few years, as statistics of Stopline show.

Stopline reviews all incoming reports, determining whether the content pertains to criminal activities. About 12% of the reported content, 4,048 instances, were classified as illegal. To ensure that illegal content can no longer be found on the internet, all those involved must take rapid action, especially the hosting ISP. In Austria, the multi-stakeholder collaboration between the reporting office, providers and authorities in the fight against illegal content has proven successful: In 2022, only two reported cases of CSAM were hosted in Austria.

On the 24th of May 2023, Stopline held its annual press conference in cooperation with the Austrian ISP Association ISPA to present its Annual Report 2022 and the data collected within that year. Media coverage after the press conference was very positive and helped further increase internet users' awareness of the hotline.
