Save the Children Finland Partners with NCMEC
Save the Children Finland has started a new partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and has launched Take It Down on its website for children and young people.
If a nude or sexually explicit picture of a child or young person is disseminated online, either intentionally or accidentally, they are advised to report it to the police or Finnish Hotline. For many children and young people, reporting can feel ineffective or inadequate and it is important to provide them with additional means to manage an often distressing and frightening situation.
The Take it Down service has been created for children who either have had their nudes or sexual images spread online or fear that their images will be spread. Through this service, one can anonymously report any nude or sexually explicit image that was taken when the subject was under the age of 18 and prevent it from being further circulated. Together with large technology platforms the service searches the images online and aims for their quick removal.
The Take it Down cooperation with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children takes into account different national legislation and societal contexts, making it easy to apply anywhere. In the case of Finland, the Finnish Hotline created a Finnish introduction and guidelines webpage on how to use the service. Among other things, the webpage includes step-by-step guidelines, an instructional video and a direct link to the service. This solution allowed easy access to the service without conflicting with Finnish legislation.
