The Hungarian Internet Hotline online information and help service (IH) operated by the National Media and Infocommunications Authority’s Office has released its annual report on its activities and achievements in 2023. Last year, the (IH) handled 2047 reports, 42% of which were related to child sexual abuse, i.e. 850 reports.


While intimate image abuse of adults remained a serious problem in 2023, the number of parents seeking help from the IH increased significantly compared to previous years. IH handled 55 reports where the reporting person clearly acted as the legal representative of their child by filing a report on an ongoing violation.

The annual report gives a general insight into the operation and procedures of the hotline and also a detailed description of its activities in 2023. In this context, it provides an in-depth analysis and summary of the evolution of the number of reports in the different reporting categories, the trends observed over the past years and the online phenomena that IH analysts have encountered most frequently while handling the reports.

In addition, the publication describes the experiences of the IH's educational, outreach and awareness-raising activities for children, parents, teachers and child protection professionals, and also presents the service's awareness-raising activities. In 2023, the IH’s colleagues reached out to over 1,700 people by discussing online threats and risks, as well as the possible solutions. One of the main findings of the IH, based on interviews with children, is that victim-blaming is a serious issue among them, which significantly increases the victim’s sense of shame and hinders them from seeking help.
