FPB Presents Hotline Insights at Africa Day Event

The Film and Publication Board (FPB) joined the International Association of Internet Hotlines (INHOPE) to boost its fight against child sexual abuse material (CSAM) in February 2009. It was only fitting that the FPB present a comprehensive overview on online harms at the Africa Day event which was held on the 24th of May 2024 at the SABC studios in Johannesburg.

Some of the key points covered included an overview of online monitoring for harmful and prohibited content, including CSAM. With the data obtained from the ICCAM system, we were able to demonstrate some critical stats in the South African context. The stats formed the core of the presentation, illustrating the types of content the FPB identifies when conducting online monitoring. Each of these areas represents significant challenges in ensuring a safe online environment, particularly in the context of protecting vulnerable groups and maintaining social cohesion.

Overall, the presentation at the Africa Day event seems to have provided valuable insights into the work of the FPB and the ongoing efforts to enhance online safety and combat harmful content. Everyone who attended the event stuck to the memo of wearing colourful attire as part of the Africa Day celebration.
