12th Conference on E-abuse of Children: Juvenile Offenders

On 20 September 2022, the Spletno oko hotline, together with the Criminal Police Directorate of the General Police Directorate of Slovenia and the Association of Informatics and Telecommunications of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, organised the 12th Conference on Child Sexual Abuse Online, held at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ljubljana. More than 220 participants took part in the conference.

The conference was primarily aimed at law enforcement agencies, courts, legislators, education and social work centres and non-governmental organisations. Participants listened to two expert presentations. In the first one, Dr Katja Filipčič from the Faculty of Law in Ljubljana presented the Slovenian model for the treatment of juvenile offenders. In the second, Nina Mezinec from the Criminal Police Directorate presented Slovenian cases in which children are recruited to send intimate photos of themselves to the offender and the consequences of online relationships. The importance of preventive measures was emphasised.

The two introductory expert presentations were followed by nine specific workshops. Participants were able to choose to attend two workshops on a wide range of topics. One workshop, for example, focused on law enforcement investigating the sexual abuse of children online and the specifics of dealing with juvenile crime suspects; another presented the work of social work centres with underage crime suspects, and one explored the possible motivations for viewing pornographic and violent content online.
