Safer Internet Centre in Albania Publishes Annual Data ReportÂ
The report was made public in the framework of the 10th National Forum: Together against Bullying and Hate Speech in Cyberspace, which is organised annually by CRCA Albania and Safer Internet Centre, in the framework of the Safer Internet Day.
According to the data, iSIGURT.al received 407 reports of online incidents in 2024, representing a 66.8% increase in reported incidents compared to last year. Tirana (capital of Albania) recorded the highest number of incidents, accounting for 48% of cases. In terms of gender, the report persists in raising the concern that girls continue to remain the main victims of online incidents and at the same time the main rapporteurs of serious events of violence and exploitation in the digital space.
About 62% of all incidents reported in iSIGURT.al were done by girls, while about 34% by boys. In 4% of cases the person reporting the incident preferred not to identify his/her gender.
The main victims of all reported online incidents are again girls in 47% of the cases analyzed (in 193 cases). Groups of children hold second place with 15% of cases, while boys and adults occupy about 12% of them.
TikTok continues to top the list of digital platforms for the number of incidents reported by children and young people, with 209 cases, followed by Facebook and Instagram with 118 cases, while Telegram is reported on 8 incidents. The main age group reporting online incidents continues to be adolescents aged 15-18 (43%), followed by those in the 19-24 age group (19%) and 25-30 (15%).
The classification of incidents reported to iSIGURT.al shows that online extortion, threats and blackmail constitute the main risk in the digital space for children and young people, with 177 cases (25% of total incidents); bullying and hate speech rank second this year, with about 40% of cases in total.
The report recommends strengthening the legal framework for cyber protection, which would have a positive impact on the protection of children and young people, as well as raising their and parents’ awareness of the risks in digital space.
